Your first reformer Pilates class at BeLigned: what to expect
A little preparation, a few questions and space to learn. Here’s how to begin at our Mullumbimby studio.
You’ve looked at the timetable. Perhaps you’ve pictured yourself on a reformer. Then come the questions: Which class should I choose? What if I don’t understand the instructions? Will everyone else know what they’re doing?
You don’t need to arrive with those questions answered.
Your first visit is a chance to get familiar with the studio, meet your teacher and try something new. There’s no need to make it a test of how fit, flexible or coordinated you already are.
Here’s how to take that first step at BeLigned.
Start with Align
If you’re new to reformer Pilates, choose Align, our beginner-friendly class.
Even if you already enjoy other forms of exercise, starting with a beginner class gives you time to get to know a different way of moving. There’s equipment to understand, unfamiliar instructions to follow and a new rhythm to find.
At BeLigned, we recommend at least three Align classes before trying another level. Give yourself that room to learn. You don’t have to decide where your whole Pilates practice is going after one visit.
Before purchasing a pass, check the timetable for Align sessions that fit comfortably into your week.
Give yourself a gentle arrival
You’ll find us at 3/43 Stuart Street, Mullumbimby.
Wear comfortable clothes you can move in, bring water and arrive at least five minutes before class to check in. Our door closes when the class starts, so late entry isn’t available.
Let your teacher know it’s your first visit. A simple “I’m new to the reformer” is a useful place to begin.
If you have an injury, are pregnant or have a health concern that could affect your participation, contact us before booking so we can discuss the class’s suitability. Where needed, seek guidance from your treating health professional.
Get curious about the reformer
The moving platform, springs and straps can look unfamiliar at first. You don’t need to memorise them before you arrive.
As you learn, ask your teacher to explain any setup or instruction you’re unsure about. Follow their guidance when adjusting the equipment, and take your time getting into position.
You may find yourself concentrating on several things at once: where your feet go, how you’re moving and what the teacher has just said. Give yourself permission to pause and ask for something to be repeated.
Learning is part of the class.
Look for three small wins
For your first session, try giving yourself three simple things to notice.
One thing you understand.
Perhaps a piece of equipment feels less mysterious, or an instruction makes sense once you’ve tried it.
One question you ask.
“Where should I feel this?” or “Could you explain that again?” can help you take a more active part in your session.
One thing you’d like to return to.
It might be a movement you enjoyed, something you want to practise or simply the time you set aside for yourself.
These are useful things to take away from a first class. You don’t need to leave having mastered every exercise.
Make your next visit fit your life
After class, take a moment to consider what worked for you. Did the time slot feel manageable? Is there something you’d like to ask before your next session?
Choose your next class around the week you actually have. Allow for travel, work, family commitments and time to rest.
Our introductory offer includes five reformer classes for $99, valid for 14 days, for new clients. It gives you an opportunity to become familiar with the studio and teachers over several visits. Check available class times and the current pass details before purchasing.
Your first class begins with one booking
You can be curious and a little unsure at the same time.
Choose an Align class, bring your questions and give yourself space to learn. We’d love to welcome you to BeLigned.
